After 1 year of ownership, I finally got around to changing the pollen filters on the Outback. The filter kit includes some incomplete instructions (that seem to presume the work is being done at the dealership where there's access to detailed factory manuals) and 2 stickers to record the date. I didn't have any stickers in my car, suggesting these are the original filters that left the assembly line. That supposition is supported by how nasty & filthy the old ones were. Ewww!
Start by opening & emptying the glovebox. Each side of the glovebox has a square peg that fits into a slot in the glovebox surround to limit its movement (shown with yellow arrows). You need to free these pegs from the slots so the glovebox will hinge completely down (ie, its contents would spill out). I didn't have anything to pry them out (ie, "in" towards the glovebox interior) so I pressed in the sides of the box (red arrows) VERY HARD to free the pegs. Reassembly was easier, as I was able to remove the springy-tab pegs once I had access to the back side, & snap them back in with the glovebox reinstalled. The glovebox light switch connector was tricky to get undone due to little slack in the wires.
With the glovebox hinged down but still in place, you next remove the passenger-side console panel. Its held in place by 2 screws (exposed on the left side of the glovebox surround; the yellow arrows in the 2nd pic show the back sides of those screw holes), a plastic screw (2nd pic red arrow; 3rd pic), 4 press-fit thingies (green & white arrows), & a tab (pink arrow); you undo the other stuff then slide the panel slightly forward to release this tab... I'm sure its easy to break if you don't know its there:
The yellow arrows below show where the console panel screws go. With the console panel removed, there's still 2 screws on the left glovebox surround and a philips-head bolt above:
There's 2 screws across the top of the surround:
And there's 2 screws and another bolt on the right side (BTW, all the black-headed screws were identical):
With the glovebox assembly removed, you can see the air chambers & blower fan. Unplug the connecter to the "resistor" & then remove its 4 retaining clips (red arrows); pry them up from their ends not their middles & cup your hand over them or they'll go flying. The yellow arrow is the fresh/recirc door & the pink arrow is the alarm shock sensor:
The resistor slides down a bit to release some tabs & then pulls away from the chamber. The red arrows show depressions in the foam from holding the upper filter in place. When reinstalling the resistor, be sure the compressed "lines" in the foam gasket re-seat correctly:
The filters are removed here. Just install the new ones in the same orientation as the old ones. The filters are not 100% airtight between the dirty & filtered sides, presumably so the system will marginally function even if they were completely clogged. The red arrow is the glovebox light connector:
Reassembly is a reverse of disassembly. Next time will probably take under 30 minutes.
UPDATE- Even though generic filters are now available, I just re-use the plastic frames & fill them with new filter material. I bought a big square home-type 3M filter at Walmart & use tin snips to cut it to size a hair bigger, then compress the pleats & insert into the frames. This gets the total cost down to a couple bucks each time.
